  16. <p>A killer claims five victims in a Florida college town
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     With its sun-drenched climate and beloved football team,
  19. Florida's Gainesville has long been an idyllic college party
  20. town. But that image was shattered last week. As students began
  21. fall classes, one male and three female students at the
  22. University of Florida and another woman at Santa Fe Community
  23. College were found stabbed or bludgeoned to death in off-campus
  24. apartments. Three of the victims were mutilated; one, an
  25. 18-year-old female honor student, was decapitated.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     The apparent pattern of the grisly murders--the four women
  28. were all attractive, petite brunets with shoulder-length hair--has touched off fears that a serial killer might be on the
  29. loose. Nearly 200 local, state and FBI investigators have
  30. poured into Gainesville to provide security and hunt for a
  31. suspect described by Police Chief Wayland Clifton as a
  32. "methodical maniac." Among the visiting sleuths: John Douglas,
  33. who helped track such serial killers as Charles Manson, New
  34. York's "Son of Sam" in the 1970s and Florida's own Ted Bundy,
  35. who was executed last year.

  37. <p>     Some experts believe that the Gainesville butcher is still
  38. in the area and that there is enough evidence to track him
  39. down. Hundreds of fearful students have deserted their
  40. off-campus apartments, at least temporarily, while others are
  41. spending their nights with large groups. More than 400 have
  42. left town altogether for their parents' homes. "People are
  43. petrified," says Marshall Knudson, director of the county's
  44. crisis center, which fielded more than 10,000 calls from
  45. jittery residents last week.
  46. </p>
  47. <p>     For now, Gainesville's normally busy taverns are eerily
  48. quiet, while many stores report a run on handguns, Chemical
  49. Mace, dead bolts, baseball bats and even broomsticks that
  50. residents are using to secure windows and doors. Fueling the
  51. hysteria are unconfirmed reports that the killer sliced off and
  52. carried away flesh from some of his victims. Says sheriff's
  53. department Lieutenant Spencer Mann: "People are calling in when
  54. they hear a branch knock up against the side of their house."
  55. Until the killer is apprehended, the good times in Gainesville
  56. are over.
